You’re in pain. But the thought of traditional surgery — if it is even possible to perform surgery for your problem — seems more frightening than facing your pain. Whether the pain you are experiencing is due to uterine fibroid growths, the small spinal fractures of osteoporosis that can develop into a “widow’s hump”, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or many other debilitating complaints, interventional radiology may be the treatment that will allow you to avoid open surgery, eliminate your pain and return you to health.

The Interventional Radiology (IR) Center uses radiology to shrink fibroids, dissolve DVT clots, pinpoint areas for treatment or biopsy and more. In many cases, IR treatment is non-invasive, produces faster results — and reduces the pain of both the medical problem and its treatment.

The advent of interventional radiology has moved x-rays from diagnosis to treatment. Using new techniques, Riverview radiologists can remove varicose veins and even improve fertility by opening blocked fallopian tubes for women or providing varicoseal embolization for men. Amazingly, if caught within nine months of their appearance, tiny fractures of the spine due to osteoporosis can be repaired by applying a substance, accurately guided by Riverview’s interventional radiologists, to stabilize the damaged vertebrae, making movement easier and less painful.

IR makes it possible to accurately locate problem areas for diagnosis or treatment. For instance, x-ray guidance allows Riverview's interventional radiologists to perform targeted needle biopsies of potentially cancerous breast cells without removing large areas of tissue. This type of biopsy reduces pain and makes healing faster.
